Care of Entomology Specimens

Light Exposure

Ultraviolet light is the primary enemy of preserved specimens. Direct sunlight will fade colours and degrade delicate wing scales over time. Display your frames away from windows. Indirect natural light or LED lighting provides safe illumination.

Temperature and Humidity

Stable environmental conditions are essential. Excessive humidity can lead to mould growth and can attract pests, while very dry conditions may cause specimens to become brittle.

Pest Prevention

Museum beetle larvae (Anthrenus) other dermestid beetles, as well as mites or booklice can damage collections. Inspect frames periodically for signs of infestation—tiny holes, frass (insect droppings), or damaged specimens.
If you notice this or see any small insects on your specimen, you can use the freezer method to kill any mites/ eggs on the specimen. 5 days in the freezer, 3 days out and another 3 days in. If you are having any further issues please don't hesitate to contact me and I will provide more detailed instructions and support. Some collectors recommend repeating this process every 4 months as a precaution.

Handling and Cleaning

Handle frames by their edges to avoid fingerprints on glass. Clean glass surfaces with a soft, lint-free cloth and appropriate glass cleaner, taking care not to allow moisture to seep into the frame. Never open frames unless you have proper tools and experience.

Display Location

Choose locations away from heating vents, radiators, and areas with temperature fluctuations. Avoid hanging frames in bathrooms or kitchens where humidity is high. Interior walls away from exterior doors and windows with high UV provide the most stable conditions.

Long-Term Storage

If storing frames, keep them upright in a climate-controlled space. Wrap in acid-free tissue and store in archival boxes with mothballs to prevent dust accumulation and physical damage and deter pests. It is still recommended to periodically check to insure no pest damage is occurring

With proper care, your framed insect displays will remain stunning focal points for decades to come.
